Parliamentary Cooperation: Upper House Speaker to Visit Jordan, Middle East, Israel in September

Speaker of the House of Councilors and President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Enaam Mayara, will conduct a working visit to Jordan, the Middle East region, and Israel, between September 1 and 8.

According to a press release from the House of Councilors, Mayara will pay an official visit to the Kingdom of Jordan (September 1-8) at the head of a parliamentary delegation, at the invitation of the President of the Jordanian Senate (House of Notables), Faisal Akef Al Fayez.

This visit is part of the ongoing dynamic of exceptional relations between Morocco and Jordan, under the aegis of the two countries’ leaders, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and His Majesty King Abdullah II.

The same source reported that this visit is in line with the ongoing reinforcement of joint parliamentary action between the House of Councilors and the Jordanian Senate, and strengthening bilateral cooperation in all fields and issues of common interest, in addition to intensifying coordination and consultation within several international institutions in the service of the best interests of the two brotherly countries.

Mayara, in his capacity as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), will also visit the Middle East region at the head of a parliamentary delegation composed of members of the Bureau of this regional parliamentary organization.

The agenda for the visit (September 5-8) includes the 50th meeting of the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), field visits, and meetings with UN officials and parliamentary and government officials in Amman, Ramallah, and al-Quds.

The House of Councilors press release noted that this visit testifies to “the priority given by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), as a platform for dialogue and communication and a channel for parliamentary diplomacy, to issues surrounding the Middle East peace process, since this parliament is the only forum in which both Palestine and Israel participate, through their national parliaments, in a constructive and ongoing dialogue alongside representatives of the parliaments of neighboring countries in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.”

This visit will also be an opportunity for the Moroccan official to “highlight the role of the Kingdom, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may Allah assist Him, in promoting peace in the Middle East and consecrating security, stability, coexistence, development, and prosperity for the peoples of the region.”

Mayara will also seize this opportunity to “reiterate Morocco’s constant and clear position, under the far-sighted leadership of His Majesty the King, in support of the Palestinian cause and Al-Quds Asharif, as well as the Kingdom’s rejection of any infringement of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to establish an independent state, with East Al-Quds as its capital.”

The press release also affirmed that the visit will also be “an opportunity to recall the role of His Majesty the King, in His capacity as Chairman of Al-Quds Committee, in preserving the special status of the Holy City of Al-Quds, respecting freedom of worship for followers of the three monotheistic religions, and protecting the Islamic character of the Holy City and the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

Similarly, emphasis will be placed on “the significant role of Bayt Mal Al-Quds Asharif Agency as the executive mechanism of Al-Quds Committee, and its efforts, under the supervision of His Majesty the King, to implement concrete projects and programs in health, education, housing, and the social field to provide for the Maqdessian population decent means of living, support their resilience, and improve their social and living conditions.”

During his visit, the Speaker of the House of Councilors aims to stress Morocco’s commitment to capitalizing on its historic and important role, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, to support the Palestinian cause, as well as its distinguished relations with all parties and active international forces, to promote the right conditions for relaunching negotiations between the Palestinian and Israeli sides, as the only way to achieve security and stability in the Middle East.

In a similar context, Mayara will pay an official visit to the Knesset on September 7, at the invitation of the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, Amir Ohna, which coincides with a visit by a delegation from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), “to explore prospects and means of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two legislative institutions and discuss several subjects and issues of common interest.

The press release concluded that this initiative is in line with the joint willingness to capitalize on and enshrine, at the parliamentary level, the results of the joint tripartite agreement signed between Morocco, the US, and Israel in December 2020 in the presence of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in addition to strengthening the dynamics of bilateral relations between the Moroccan and Israeli parliaments.
