The World Chovgan Championships wrapped up on November 8 in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku with the Moroccan national polo selection as world runner-up.
The Moroccan selection finished second in the championship following its final match against Azerbaijan (4-0) in favor of the Azerbaijani selection.
The Moroccan national selection, which includes Sidi Mohammed El Mhamdi, Moulay Abdessalam El Hanafi, Zouhir Lachgar, and Taissir Kadiri, qualified for the finals after defeating Kazakhstan (3-1), and Poland (4-0), while the Azerbaijani team qualified for the final after beating Turkey (7-1) and Kazakhstan (7-0).
Poland snatched third place after beating Uzbekistan (5-0).
The World Chovgan Championship saw the participation of six countries, namely Morocco, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Poland, and Turkey.
Chovgan, extremely popular in Azerbaijan, is a traditional equestrian game played on a flat field between two teams of players mounted on horses. Similar to polo, each team includes four riders who attempt to kick a small ball into the opponent’s net using wooden mallets.
