Morocco was elected, on December 7, by acclamation, President of the 32nd session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), following the decision of the African Group in Vienna to unanimously nominate the Kingdom’s Permanent Representative in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, for this position.
According to Farhane, this election is a new recognition of the substantial contribution of the Kingdom to international efforts in crime prevention and criminal justice. It also showcases the credibility that the Kingdom enjoys thanks to its actions countering terrorism and transnational organized crime.
On this occasion, the Moroccan official jointly chaired, alongside the President of the 66th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), the resumption session of the commissions to examine the report of the Working Group in charge of improving the governance of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
It should be noted that the Moroccan official will chair, on December 8, the 32nd session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which will be devoted to the examination of budgets, management strategies, and other topics.
The session will also address the contribution of the CCPCJ to the work of the Economic and Social Council, including the review and implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, as well as the election of new members of the Bureau of the 33rd session of the CCPCJ, which will take place in Vienna in May 2024.
The CCPCJ is the United Nations’ principal policy-making body in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. The Commission aims to improve international action to combat national and transnational crime and the efficiency and fairness of criminal justice administration systems.
