The Head of Moroccan Diplomacy Nasser Bourita reminded the UN General Assembly of Morocco’s determination to find a definitive solution to the regional conflict around the Moroccan Sahara by opting for the solution of autonomy.
Nasser Bourita indeed highlighted the massive participation of the population of the Moroccan Sahara (highest participation rate) in the elections of September 8, which confirms, according to him, the attachment to the territorial unity of the Kingdom and the full commitment from the population of the Moroccan Sahara to the implementation of the new development model in the southern provinces.
This membership “undeniably reflects the will of the population of the southern provinces to engage fully and effectively” in the implementation of the sustainable development project launched by King Mohammed VI in 2015, the Minister underlined, by videoconference, in Morocco’s speech during the High Level Debate of the 76th United Nations General Assembly.
Nasser Bourita indicated, in this sense, that the voting operation in the Moroccan Sahara, like the other regions of Morocco, took place in a climate of mobilization and in accordance with international democratic standards, thus confirming that the populations in the southern provinces of Morocco live in peace and serenity and participate fully in the socio-economic development of the region, as well as in political life.
Thus, the Minister expressed Morocco’s readiness to continue to cooperate with the United Nations as part of the efforts made by its Secretary General to reach a realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution, based on compromise in full respect of the sovereignty of Morocco and its territorial integrity.
While affirming that this solution can only be found with the real party to the conflict, namely Algeria, which must “assume its full responsibility in the political process of the round tables, commensurate with its responsibility in creating and maintaining of this conflict, “said Nasser Bourita.
He also said that the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 remains the only way to a political and final solution to this artificial regional dispute.
He finally recalled that Morocco, since its independence, has placed the issue of support for stability in its regional and international environment at the heart of its diplomacy, stressing that the Kingdom remains committed to working for the final settlement of the regional conflict around of the Moroccan Sahara, with full respect for its territorial integrity and within the framework of its national sovereignty.
Then he expressed Morocco’s concern about the tragic humanitarian situation of the populations of the Tindouf camps, where the host country, Algeria, ceded its responsibilities to an armed separatist group, in flagrant violation of the principles of international law. humanitarian.
On this occasion, the Minister called on the international community to act in order to bring Algeria to respect its commitments under international conventions, in particular by allowing the High Commissioner for Refugees to proceed with the registration and census of these populations. in accordance with successive requests from the Security Council.
