The authorities found the bodies of at least 46 people in a truck in Texas State, according to several local media, in a possible new immigration tragedy, especially since trucks are a primary means of smuggling clandestine immigrants to the United States.
Several television channels in San Antonio, the city located 240 km from the border with Mexico, where the truck was seized, reported this toll, citing officials in the security services and ambulance teams.
A city worker heard a cry for help from the truck shortly before 6 pm Monday and discovered the gruesome scene, Police Chief William McManus said. Hours later, body bags lay spread on the ground near the trailer as a grim symbol of the calamity.
San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said the 46 who died had “families who were likely trying to find a better life.”
