GOTION High-Tech, a Sino-European group and a leader in the electric mobility sector, plans to establish an industrial ecosystem to produce electric vehicle batteries and energy storage systems in Morocco. This ambitious project would require an estimated investment of MAD 65 billion, creating over 25.000 jobs.
For its investment project, GOTION High-Tech selected Morocco thanks to its status as a leader in the automotive industry in Africa.
Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, chaired on May 31, in Marrakech, the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Moroccan government and the GOTION High-Tech group to define the framework for the Gigafactory project and its integrated ecosystem in Morocco. The memorandum was signed by the Minister Delegate in charge of Investment, Convergence, and Evaluation of Public Policies, Mohcine Jazouli, and representatives of the Gotion High-Tech group.
The investment from GOTION High-Tech will establish a comprehensive battery production solution, with a potential capacity of 100 GWh/year, in Bouknadel in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region.
Through this partnership, Morocco seeks to join forces with a key player in the renewable energies and electric mobility sector, which includes Volkswagen as a major shareholder.
On this occasion, Jazouli stated that “this memorandum is a preliminary step before signing an investment agreement, which will enable the launch of a Gigafactory and strengthen the Kingdom’s position as a leading player in the automotive industry,” adding that Morocco achieved its position thanks to the Leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
For his part, the President of GOTION High-Tech, Li Zhen, expressed “the group’s commitment to contributing to the global development of green mobility solutions,” noting that “GOTION is delighted to cooperate with Morocco on this project that aims to promote decarbonization and the deployment of innovative energy solutions.”
Zhen also praised Morocco’s captivating landscapes, inclusive culture, and peaceful society, adding that “the Wise Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI enabled the establishment of strong economic relations between Morocco and several countries.”
Morocco enjoys numerous advantages, particularly its positioning as a competitive and decarbonized platform for automotive production, that promote the Kingdom as an attractive and credible solution for major industry players looking to establish production units to serve global markets.
