The President of the World Bank (WB) Group, Ajay Banga, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, and Morocco’s Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah Alaoui affirmed that the two institutions Annual Meetings will proceed as planned in Marrakech (October 9 – 15).
In a statement issued on September 18, the parties stressed that the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund personnel have been working in close cooperation with the relevant Moroccan authorities and a team of experts since the earthquake of September 8 to diligently examine Marrakech’s capacity to host this year’s Annual Meetings.
According to the same source, the assessment closely considered that this major event would not hinder the ongoing rescue and relief efforts in the city and that the safety of all participants would be guaranteed.
In this regard, and following careful examination of the situation, the relevant institutions decided to proceed with the hosting of the 2023 Annual Meetings in Marrakech as previously planned.
“At this very difficult time, we believe that the Annual Meetings also provide an opportunity for the international community to stand by Morocco and its people, who have once again shown resilience in the face of tragedy,” concluded the statement.
