Nairobi: Moroccan Women’s Tennis Team Snatches Billie Jean King Cup

The Moroccan women’s tennis team won the Billie Jean King Cup (Group III Africa), on June 17 in Nairobi, after defeating Tunisia in the finals 2-1.

In singles, Aya El Aouni beat Feryel Ben Hassen (6-0/7-5), while Yasmine Kabbaj lost to Chiraz Bechri (6-4/6-4).

In doubles, Moroccans Malak El Allami and Aya El Aouni sealed the victory for the national team by defeating Tunisian duo Feryel Ben Hassen and Chiraz Bechri 2 sets to 1 (7-6/6-3/6-0).

Following their win in the Women’s edition of the Davis Cup, the Moroccan team has guaranteed their qualification for the Europe/Africa Group II in 2024.

On this occasion, coach Mehdi Ait Barhouch stated that the players demonstrated strong concentration throughout this tournament, adding that this achievement is the fruit of long-term hard work by the Moroccan Royal Tennis Federation, which has prioritized fundamental training, sparing no effort in supporting young Moroccan tennis players.

For their part, the Moroccan tennis players expressed their joy following their victory, noting that they were determined to win the Cup despite the complicated weather conditions.

After losing against the host team in the opening match, the Moroccan team recorded four wins over Uganda (3-0), Namibia (3-0), Nigeria (3-0), and Botswana (3-0) before defeating Tunisia in the final and proving their dominance at the continental level.
